Shoveling dirt
Man, I’m out of shape.
I shoveled dirt this weekend to make way for our soon-to-be streetside garden. I dug only an hour Saturday and three Sunday (yay for no rain Sunday!) before crying uncle. Best to grip the shovel both palms down; fling with your torso, not your bicep. Even better: having Luna come down to the dig with cool water and cookies!
Our parking strip is a westward-facing, 7×36′ length of grass (make that shitty grass and weeds) that slopes south down its long side. There’s a fireplug on its south end, our driveway to the north, powerlines overhead. If we drop in a 4′-wide path and leave a 2′ edge on the street, we net two growing beds, 5×16′ apiece.
I checked with Sayers Fuel, who quoted USD193 + tax for 6″ of topsoil mix, delivered. With no internet presence, Sayers makes you call them for a quote. Or you can drop by and muddy your boots like I did, Mon—Sat, 8—4 pm. They carry Cedar Grove compost in bulk, and that’s good stuff.
Picked up landscaping fabric, a wheelbarrow wheel, a gas can at Home Depot. Posted a “free fill dirt” give-away to Craigslist. I hope somebody takes away this stuff!
