I’m feeling great about this blog. Blogging with WordPress is tons more fun since I installed a few, key plugins and cleaned house a bit.
Statistics: Who’s hitting my blog? What’re they hitting me with? Install ShortStat v0.36b and PathStat and understand what addiction is about. While you’re at it, sign up for StatCounter.
Amazon: What’s in my book-bag? What’s on my iPod? Install Amazon Media Manager for WordPress 1.5 and tell the world what consumes you (with little pictures, to boot—-see my sidebar).
Translate: Why, Portuguese and Koreans ought to be able to read my posts! Install Translator and let Google translate your English-language blog into eight other languages. Comes with a keen set of tiny national flag images (again, see top of my sidebar).
Peace of Mind: Would I lose everything should the servers go down? Install WordPress Database Backup 1.6, as well as WP-Cron 1.2, and even your largest WordPress database tables get backed up nightly and emailed (in my case, to a Gmail account). Brilliant work, Skippy and Owen. (Update: here’s a how-to, titled “Wordpress + Google = Killer Combo”.)
Oh, I finally got around to creating custom error pages (401 Unauthorized, 403 Forbidden, 404 Not Found, 500 Internal Server Error). Very simple ones, but now done.
I mucked around with my site so sloppily that it was no longer valid XHTML. So this morning I combed through my PHP templates. Huzzah! They validate once more.
