So my brother read my blog, liked it, and wanted help replacing his blog at Harvard Weblogs, which runs on Manila. (He wants to start blogging in earnest, and Manila, he says, is not-so-intuitive.)

Hell, I can do that. I installed WordPress for him last night (as a sub-domain of my site). The procedure went much more smoothly—-taking all of a half hour—-than my bumpy ride trying to install WP 1.2 last year and then upgrading it, in increments, to WP 1.5.1.3. I’ll give a nod, though, to my year’s experience with the platform.

With my own blog, I finally got tired of my Kubrick-based theme. I switched to Connection, a sweet piece of work by Patricia Müller. Change being in the air, I also installed a slew of new plugins, including the final release of Spam Karma 2; the essential WordPress Database Backup; WP Admin Bar 2, a blog administration toolbar that’s simply handy; and SRG Clean Archives (Update: I switched to Smart Archives) for stylish display of my archives. Google Sitemaps Generator creates an XML file that makes my blog’s entries more visible to Google’s search engine. And let’s not forget tagging: I registered my blog with Technorati, then installed Jerome’s Keywords in order enable my blog for tagging, and to index those tags with Technorati; also, Semiologic’s Extract Terms plugin is good for automagically pulling Yahoo! terms from my posts and feeding them to Terms2Tags plugin, which “turns your post’s Yahoo! terms into Technorati tags, for use to find related posts off your web site.”

Eyes glazing over? Mine too. I installed only a few essential plugins for my brother, and installed a theme that I thought he’d like (Nao’s Orange Sky). Should he not like WordPress, well, I have no Plan B!
