BeatWalk brrrrr
Luna, Sophie and I dashed through our first BeatWalk and just got back. Turns out it’s a great excuse to pop into Columbia City’s shops and restaurants, despite it being 36°F out! We made sure that Sophie was snug as a bug in her patented Pink Astronaut Garb.
I entered Bookworm Exchange, got my hand stamped, and danced with Sophie on the shop’s periphery while a jazz sextet blared away. The bookshop looked better than I remembered (because more new books were on offer?), so I’ll drop by again.
At Revival Lighting we found a terrific young singer-songwriter, Andrea Wittgens, singing and working a keyboard. (Between songs Andrea noted Sophie’s rapt attention on her partner’s guitar.) I could’ve stayed all night listening to that pair.
But we were hungry. El Sombrero beckoned, but Luna has a standing veto against Mexican food, any Mexican food. Lotte’s was so packed that we went a little further and ended up in the Columbia City Ale House. The smell of the place was so promising. The band was in front, so we seated ourselves in the rear. That’s when a waitress warned us that persons under 21 aren’t allowed on the premises. “Even a baby?” I asked, thinking that we’d hardly stoop to feeding a lager to Sophie through a nipple. “Even a baby,” she replied. “We’re licensed as a tavern.” We left, indignant that for being baby-bound we’d just been booted from the bar.
We ended up in Geraldine’s Counter because Tutta Bella was a half-hour’s wait. I welcome Geraldine’s to the neighborhood even if it’s never quite worked for me. I can’t understand the pull of Tutta Bella or Geraldine’s. Since we haven’t tried The Wellington, the Ale House, or El Sombrero (Luna’s veto be damned), next BeatWalk I’m eating at one of them.
