FAlbum

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

I finally installed FAlbum, Elijah Cornell’s plugin that integrates Flickr galleries into WordPress. It makes fabulous galleries; see how good my own galleries look.

Unfortunately, installation is a bitch. No matter what I did, I just could’t get friendly URLs to work, and attempts to troubleshoot it just broke the damned thing, again and again. So […]

Lists: WordPress tweaking

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

I keep tweaking my WordPress blog, trying to bring it closer to some kind of ideal. Here, in list form, is what I did recently.

New banner photograph. I found a brilliant photo by scouring Flickr for Creative Commons, “BY-NC-SA”-licensed photographs. I tweaked it in Photoshop, then masked it into my banner image. Began using <!—-more—-> tags […]

Update: I just saw an overview of the new GUI for Office and their new thinking in interface […]

Monday, August 1st, 2005

So my brother read my blog, liked it, and wanted help replacing his blog at Harvard Weblogs, which runs on Manila. (He wants to start blogging in earnest, and Manila, he says, is not-so-intuitive.)

Hell, I can do that. I installed WordPress for him last night (as a sub-domain of my site). The procedure went much […]

Gmail for baby

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

I just signed Sophie up for a Gmail account.

Obviously, it’ll be some time before Sophie starts writing emails. But I wanted to register a reasonable user name for her before they were all taken. More than that, though, I want to start writing emails to Sophie. Writing about your infant daughter on a public blog […]

User level 2

Sunday, May 8th, 2005

I love WordPress, but—-loving to tinker—-I find myself tweaking it more than I post to the damned thing. And isn’t that missing the point? Administrators have a distracting wealth of privileges. Logging yourself in at User Level 2 may help:

Create for yourself a new user account
