Sophie’s lying in bed with me babbling, playing, once in a while screeching. We’re listening to The Essential Bob Dylan and Sophie’s showing off the new dance she does up on hands and knees … let’s call it “The Sophie Hump.” Luna’s smiling at us from her corner armchair.

I joined a gym several weeks ago (the Epicenter) but until today didn’t keep records. So I created a gym category where I will post my workout logs and observations.
I do high intensity cardio (the Master Trainer GXP protocol). Three times a week I use an elliptical trainer the way I did today.

For days now I’ve felt like hell. I’m sitting at work and am so not having fun right now. Yet I’m not “sick” in the slightest nor have I quaffed a single beer.
It’s other things. Since Thanksgiving I have carelessly skipped my gym dates, shorted myself on vegetables and fresh fruit, and am bearing a monstrous huge sleep deficit. My body’s just paying me back for treating it like shit.

Kino’s eight. Sian and Loan were there with Amit (we met him last when Luna was three months pregnant). In a first, Luna dressed Sophie
in shoes given her by Rosalind, their soft leather soles a good fit. Seated at his flaming cake, Kino made a bunch of faces. He was different from last year, I thought, less innocent. Luna gifted him a certificate from Borders Bookstore. The boys organized a game, each one sporting massive Nerf sidearms. At one point all the men had clustered around the big TV. Aunt Tuyet said that contractors doing their remodel have delayed the work. Loan’s travelled with Amit on some business trips, swimming, for example, in their hotel’s 47th-floor pool with 360° views onto Hong Kong. Nice. Hoang, wrapped in a scarf and sick as a dog, invited all to come to Jessalyn’s fourth birthday party on the 23rd. Noon the next day, Oanh hosts a gathering
sans Christmas tree. (Funny, Luna and I will also forego the tree this year.)
On the road home we happened across our neighborhood in Federal Way. I made a U-turn because Luna wanted us to drive past the old house. For a year, early in our marriage, we’d lived out of a tiny bedroom above the garage. We drove past the Old Country Buffet where Luna’s first job in the United States was busing tables: “A five hour shift felt like you had worked ten.” Their food turned her stomach; she only ever ate the salad and apple pie. Oh, there was the Group Health parking lot where I showed Luna how to drive. Big chunks of memory falling from the sky.

A squash! Like a toothless chipmunk, she’ll gnaw at the stem end with her gums, which causes a squeaking sound that’ll have you on the floor.

I was cradling Sophie in the kitchen, minding my business, when Luna, who was finishing up her breakfast, had a revelation. Where did the damn stickers come from? One clung to the edge of our fruit bowl. Another curled up at the edge of the sink. She’d wondered for weeks. Then she knew.
It was me, apple eater, peeling off stickers and blithely putting them wherever they wanted to be.

Luna, Sophie and I dashed through our first BeatWalk and just got back. Turns out it’s a great excuse to pop into Columbia City’s shops and restaurants, despite it being 36°F out! We made sure that Sophie was snug as a bug in her patented Pink Astronaut Garb.
I entered Bookworm Exchange, got my hand stamped, and danced with Sophie on the shop’s periphery while a jazz sextet blared away. The bookshop looked better than I remembered (because more new books were on offer?), so I’ll drop by again.
